Project Overview

South Australia’s electricity network is evolving to meet the growing demand for reliable energy and support the State’s transition to a low-emission energy future.

As part of this transformation, ElectraNet is progressing the Northern Transmission Project (NTx) to strengthen transmission connections between the Mid North, Greater Adelaide and the Upper Spencer Gulf (Whyalla).

The project will ensure South Australian energy consumers, businesses and industries have continued access to secure, reliable and affordable electricity while enabling large-scale renewable energy integration and economic development opportunities.

The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) identified NTx as an ‘actionable project’ in its 2024 Integrated System Plan (ISP), recognising the need to increase power transfer capacity across South Australia’s transmission network.

NTx has also been identified as a national energy priority project by the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, which will provide the project with expedited environmental approval pathways.

To ensure NTx delivers the greatest long-term benefit for South Australian energy consumers, we will undertake a detailed cost-benefit analysis known as the Regulated Investment Test for Transmission (RIT-T), which will assess a range of options for increasing transmission capacity to determine the best solution.

A comprehensive investigation and engagement process is now underway to inform early planning and route selection as part of the RIT-T, including consideration of costs, benefits, environmental factors, land access and level of community acceptance.

ElectraNet remains committed to working closely with communities, Traditional Owners, landholders, businesses and industry stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring feedback on local priorities and concerns are included in our assessments.
